In Black Pool, Mississippi, a skeleton entangled with a rope is found in a swamp. Certain high-powered local men know the identity of the skeleton, but they desperately want to keep it a secret. They become angry and violent, especially toward Detective Louis Kincaid who recently and reluctantly returned to Black Pool. Kincaid has many unresolved bitter memories of the place he once called home.
